YAVATMAL, AUG 24: A micro-measuring gadget has been developed by two young scientists of the town. The gadget has been accorded the right of sole-patent by the Government of India.

Achyut Padmawar and Anil Sawale, both former students of the local Amolakchand College, have developed an expansion calliper, a micro-measuring gadget based on geometrical calculations which can measure lengths up to five microns without any manual calculations. The instrument has five functional modes.

The students earlier demonstrated the gadget in 1990 in front of a select audience and claimed that it would be a great breakthrough in the field of Physics. The known instruments for measuring small lengths were Vernier Callipers and screw-gauges only.

However, they continued their efforts to invent a gadget which would simplify the procedure of measuring lengths in microns, and finally succeeded. They later applied for the sole-patent right for their invention which was granted in 1994. The Limca Book of World Records has taken note of the new gadget developed by the duo. According to the students, the new gadget could be further modified to measure even lesser lengths.

Sawale is the general secretary of Rationalists and Thinkers Association (RATA) and works as the manager of the consumer store of the Zilla Parishad, while his friend Padmawar is working as the Manager (R&D) with a private firm.
