Mumbai-based BPO player WNS Group has replaced Wipro Spectramind as the frontrunner among third party BPO service providers over 2003-04, an annual ranking by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) said on Tuesday.

Daksh e-Services and Convergsys fell in the third and fourth slot, with HCL’s BPO arm, Zenta, ICICI OneSource and MPhasis trailing after in ranking that includes EXL Services, and new entrants Tracmail and vCustomer, which fell among the top 15 players.

‘‘The ITES-BPO industry including ‘third-party’ players has grown phenomenally, giving rise to the need for dynamic rankings.

Today’s rankings are in accordance with the US GAAP format keeping this in mind,’’ said NASSCOM President Kiran Karnik.Global best practices that are acknowledged to be transparent and reliable are supported by GAAP standards, he said.

“NASSCOM rankings have emerged as an industry benchmark used by analysts and customers globally.’’ The ITES-BPO segment grew 46 per cent to reach US $3.6 billion in 2003-04, from $2.5 billion in 2002-03.

In the last financial year, ITES-BPO companies were the largest recruiters in the IT/ITES sector adding about 70,000 jobs. The sector is estimated to grow by about 40 per cent in 2004-05 to reach revenues of $5.1 billion.

The ITES-BPO segment contributes 29 per cent of the total IT Software and Service exports from India.

Captive units account for 65 per cent of the ITES-BPO industry with one new captive centres added every week in 2003-04. The present survey did not take captive centres into account, but only analysed the third-party centres.
