In the other second round matches today, fifth seed Jelena Kostanic of Croaita bested Vera Douchevina of Russia 6-1, 6-3 while 116th ranked and unseeded here, Mervana Jugic-Salkic of Bosnia and Herzogovina created a minor upset as she knocked out eighth seed Lubomira Kurhajcova of Slovakia, who is currently ranked 84 in the world, 7-6, (6), 4-6, 6-3.
Unseeded Japanese Yuka Yoshida, who made a sensational start by ousting top seed compatriot Saori Obata in the opener, crashed out losing to the promising Russian Maria Kirilenko, 2-6, 3-6. In another match, China’s sixth seed Jie Zheng put it past Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus 6-3, 6-2.
