The Jhajjar police on Sunday arrested two persons,allegedly the main conspirators of the daylight ambush on the police van carrying five undertrials all members of the Bhagwan gang in Jhajjar district of Haryana on Saturday.
Those arrested,Anil and Rajesh,reportedly belong to a rival gang. While Anil is already lodged in Jhajjar jail in connection with another murder case,Rajesh is sarpanch the of Karor village in Rohtak district. During interrogation,Anil and Rajesh have confessed to the attack.
Three undertrials Bhagwan gangs leader Sri Bhagwan,his brother Dilbagh and accomplice Anil aka Fauji died in the ambush carried out by 15 armed men,some 40 km from Gurgaon,on Saturday. Their two other accomplices,Naseem and Ranbir aka Fauji,sustained injuries.
Two policemen,accompanying the undertrials,also sustained bullet injuries in the attack.
Bhagwan gang members are also the residents of Karor village. While Bhagwan had remained the villages sarpanch for the last 10 years,Rajesh was elected this time. This led to enmity among the two,the accused had told the police.
The village has around 2,000 registered voters. Lately,Bhagwans younger brother Dilbagh had contested for the post of sarpanch against Rajesh. Both Bhagwan and Dilbagh were in jail,when Dilbagh filed his nomination for the elections. While 1,320 votes were polled in Rajeshs favour,merely 16 votes were polled in favour of Dilbagh. Following this,Dilbagh and Bhagwan started to threaten Rajesh by saying that the moment they get out of jail,he will be their next target.
According to the police,Bhagwan and his gang members had eliminated Rajeshs wife and aunt about three years ago and Saturdays attack was in retaliation to those killings.
