Top cop Singhal,three others granted bail

Suspended IPS officer G L Singhal and three other accused policemen were granted bail by the special CBI court on Monday after the agency failed to file chargesheet within 90 days of arrests in connection with the 2004 fake encounter that killed 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Suspended IPS officer G L Singhal and three other accused policemen were granted bail by the special CBI court on Monday after the agency failed to file chargesheet within 90 days of arrests in connection with the 2004 fake encounter that killed 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and three others.

This is the first time in an encounter case probed by the CBI that accused policemen have got relief after the Central probe agency failed to file chargesheet on time. Under section 167(2) of Code of Criminal Procedure,an accused is entitled to get default bail if the investigating agency fails to file chargesheet within 90 days of the arrest.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate H S Khutwad granted bail to Singhal,suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Tarun Barot,J G Parmar (retired as DSP) and Inspector Bharat Patel. DSP Barot and Parmar are also accused in Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case.
