There are ups and downs in politics: PM on Tharoor

With pressure mounting on his party to revisit its strategy of backing Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor over his role in the IPL Kochi controversy,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said “there are always ups and downs in politics”.

Singh was responding to a query on the uproar over the issue in Parliament as he flew home from his trip abroad.

Congress crisis managers maintained it was up to the PM to take a call on Tharoor’s continuation in the Council of Ministers — Singh had said he would ascertain facts on his return. But sources said it appeared that the leadership no longer wanted to risk the Congress image for what increasingly looked like a case of individual interest.

Congress sources said Tharoor’s explanation in Lok Sabha failed to cut ice with his defence of friend Sunanda Pushkar in the row over the IPL Kochi franchise.

“The Prime Minister has also said some days ago in the US that he would look into the facts before taking a decision. He has only just arrived. I don’t think it is fair not to give him sufficient time. Let him look into the matter, let us not be impatient,” said party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi.

Asked whether the party agreed with Tharoor’s explanation on the franchise,Singhvi said “we don’t go into the merits of that.”
