The Supreme Court on Friday favoured the resumption of mining operations in Category B iron ore mines in Karnatakas Bellary,Chitradurga and Tumkur districts after ensuring all legalities and penalty measures.
It is right that very radical measures are required for environment protection and also for an inclusive growth. What has happened in Karnataka (regarding illegal mining) has happened nowhere in the world. That is why a SPV and a Comprehensive Environment Plan for the Mining Impact Zone (CEPMIZ) around the mining leases are so very important, said a Forest Bench led by Justice Aftab Alam, saying he could pronounce the order on Monday.
The Bench was going through a note by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC),which was asked to prescribe the conditions before the court would lift its ban on 65 Category B mining leases.
