Rural polls: HC seeks response on phases

While the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday suggested to hold the panchayat elections

While the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday suggested to hold the panchayat elections in five phases due to acute shortage of security forces, the West Bengal government placed a proposal to hold the elections in four phases.

The panchayat polls are at present scheduled to be held in three phases — on July 2,July 6 and July 9.

Following the Division Bench’s proposal, the state election commission (SEC) counsel submitted to the High Court that it had no objection to the state’s fresh proposal to increase the phases if it could guarantee deployment of adequate security forces. The polls cannot be held otherwise,he added.

The Division Bench of the Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi then asked the Advocate General to submit the requirement and shortfall of forces on Wednesday.
