Prof complains to Mamata against Kolkata Police

The officer telephoned Majumdar’s residence twice and asked his daughter about the family.

A Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics Professor,Abhi Dutta Majumdar, has lodged a complaint with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh accusing the Special Branch of Kolkata Police of “grilling” his eight-year-old daughter.

Majumdar, who is organising an education convention on September 17,said that on September 13,he had received a call at his office from Santanu Moitra,an officer of the Special Branch. “He started asking me questions about the convention and about the people who would attend. He was asking for personal details of the members of our organisation,” the professor said.

Later, allegedly, the officer telephoned Majumdar’s residence twice and asked his daughter about the family and her parents when they were not present.

“When I returned,my daughter started crying. She is very scared… Moreover, they called up my wife who is a senior professor in a college. The officer grilled my wife also, who is not even a member of any organisation,” said Majumdar.

Denying police harassment,Partha Sarathi Ghosh,Joint CP,Intelligence, said,“The number of his residence was on the leaflet that was circulated and that is why our officer called him on that number. His daughter picked up and gave her mother’s mobile number. We are sorry if he and his family members were hurt.”
