A speeding police vehicle fatally knocked down seven persons and left a dozen injured near Royal Market in Old Bhopal on Saturday,setting off a chain of events that caused tension and traffic jams.The dead have been identified as Rakesh Vatswar,Kamlesh Soni,Bhumika,Abdul Khan,Suchita Jowhri,Deepak Mishra and Abhishek Agrawal.
A police van carrying 22 prisoners was on its way back to the Central Jail from Hamidia Hospital when the driver lost control on a steep slope hitting a two-wheeler,an autorickshaw and a mini bus. The collision with the mini bus slowed down the police vehicle and saved many lives as several people were out on the streets on way to offer prayers in a nearby mosque .
Alleging that the driver was drunk,people pelted stones and tried to set the vehicle afire.The law and order situation took a turn for the worse with angry people blocking the traffic demanding that the Home Minister be asked to visit the spot. The police resorted to cane- charge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the violent crowd.
