With the international market evincing interest in traditional Indian medicines, the Indian Medicines Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (IMPCL),the public sector undertaking under the aegis of Department of Ayush,is all set to foray into export of Ayurvedic and Unani medicines.

The IMPCL has so far received proposals from countries like Mauritius,Australia and Kazakhstan for exporting traditional preparations like pain-relieving oil, hair care oil,anaemia-alleviation medicine and chyawanprash.

These are high-quality medicines. Of late, the international market has started showing a lot of interest in our products,as they understand that these medicines have minimal side effects. The proposals show there is a lot of scope for these medicines abroad, Brig (Retd) V A M Hussain, managing director,IMPCL,told The Indian Express.

However, before the corporation decides on exporting the medicines,it has to confirm to the health standards of these countries. The IMPCL is already in the process of getting its Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance, the basis standard of pharma products manufacturing and testing, approved by the World Health Organisation.

Once we confirm the standard of our facilities to their regulatory system,we will start exporting. It should not take more than three months, added Hussain.

Officials in the Department of Ayush feel export would not shift their focus from domestic demand, which is also increasing. The foremost aim would be to take care of the domestic demand and then focus on exports. The domestic demand has risen over the years, said an official.

The IMPCL,which produces 195 Ayurvedic products and 75 Unani medicines,is the largest supplier of the Central government health scheme for the Indian system of medicine products.
