A 75-year-old lawyer urged the Supreme Court Monday to prohibit the use of terms my lord or your lordship in Indian courts, claiming it was a relic of the colonial era,a symbol of slavery and was against the dignity of the country.
The petition was filed by lawyer Shiv Sagar Tiwari and was submitted before a bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi. The Bench, after briefly hearing his plea, asked how it could issue such a direction and asked him whether any court in the country insisted on being addressed by these terms.
Tiwari replied that one of his petitions in the SC was dismissed purely because he did not address the court by those terms.
