The Mumbai police are locked in a dispute over the age of the accused in the kidnap and murder of HSC student Mukeem Khan, with the parents claiming that the boy is a minor. While the police claim that Jamal Shaikh (name changed) is 19,a major and hence liable to be tried under the provisions of the IPC,Jamal’s parents say he is 17 and his case should be handled as per the juvenile justice system.

The police say Jamal is the mastermind of the crime. Police inspector Baburao Mukhedkar said,“It was Jamal who planned the crime and persuaded Salim (name changed) to join him. He had told us where the body was dumped and other such details.”

Mukeem,18,a student of Rizvi College, left his house on Friday telling his parents that he was going to meet Jamal. Around 2 pm,Mukeem’s father,a businessman, received a call demanding a ransom of Rs 2 lakh. He registered a case of kidnapping. Jamal was arrested on Monday.
