Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai finally yielded to Opposition pressure and asked Land Reforms Minister Prabhu Sah to quit over his alleged involvement in a murder case. Sah tendered his resignation on Sunday after Bhattarai and Maoist chairman Prachanda met to discuss the issue and demanded his resignation.
Sah,a powerful Maoist leader from the Madhes region,is the alleged mastermind behind the murder last year of Kashi Tiwari,chief of the Hindu Yuva Sangh.
The Central office bearers of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M) took stock of mounting opposition pressure Sunday before taking a decision. The party feels that Sah is not involved in the murder,but is asking him to step down to create a political atmosphere of consensus and cooperation, a party statement clarified.
Bhattarai,however,left the decision regarding the removal of Defence Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari to leaders of the United Democratic Madhes Front. Demands for Bhandari to quit mounted two weeks ago after he said there was no law to prevent Madhes parties from seceding.
