The Nair Service Society (NSS),a powerful organisation representing the upper class Nair community in Kerala, has termed Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan uncultured and undemocratic.
The CM belongs to backward Ezhava community.
The NSS could not think of VS becoming the chief minister again. He is uncultured and undemocratic. He thinks he is above all. The NSS has supported the Congress-led UDF to ensure VS does not come back to power again. The NSS had communicated its disagreement to the CPM leadership when the party had decided to give ticket to VS, NSS acting general secretary G Sukumaran Nair said Wednesday.
The imprisonment of senior UDF leader R Balakrishna Pillai by the Supreme Court in a corruption case, pursued earnestly by the CM,seems to have provoked the NSS. Pillai is a member of the NSS directorial board.
VS had,in fact, taken pride in sending him to jail.
Reacting to Nairs outburst, the CM said: There are two types of leaders in NSS; one category of genuine leaders and another group of sycophants of corrupt leaders such as Pillai. Nair belongs to the second category, he said.
Nairs remarks evoked sharp reactions from the Left and the BJP. Three offices of the NSS were attacked in Alappuzha, home district of the CM. CPM activists also took out protest marches in Kasargode and Kollam against the NSS leader.
Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the NSS had showed its true culture.
The state BJP said Nair should have avoided the insulting remark.
