Eminent historian,Professor Mushirul Hasan, who failed in his bid to get a second term as vice-chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia, has been appointed Director General of National Archives of India.

Hasan was picked for the post by a search-cum-selection committee. He will hold the post for an initial period of three years which can be extended later. The National Archives was without a full-time Director General for almost a decade. “Yes,I have been made the offer and I have accepted it. I hope to take charge of National Archives very shortly,” Hasan said.

A Culture Ministry official said Hasan was likely to join by the middle of next month.

The appointment fills a big void in the National Archives which was being served by joint secretaries in the Culture Ministry for many years now. National Archives is the third major cultural institution to get a full-time Director General in the past six months, after the Archeological Survey of India and the National Library,Kolkata.
