In a bid to reduce the heavy dependence on foreign workers,Malaysia is devising a system to raise the cost of employing outsiders.
The system is being devised by the Human Resources Ministry.
The government wanted to limit the recruitment of foreign workers to 1.5 million in three years as proposed by the Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers laboratory and changes would be made to the recruitment system to achieve this,Human Resource Minister Dr S Subramaniam said.
“By increasing the recruitment costs,the government hoped to resolve the issue of unskilled foreign workers with very low pay,” he was quoted by national newsagency ‘Bernama’ as saying.
However,he said,the system would not be used for sectors like plantation and agriculture because there was a permanent demand for foreign workers in these sectors.
Sectors where the number of foreign workers would be reduced included fields which required knowledge and high technology,the minister said.
