Lokayukta:SC rejects Gujarat plea

The Supreme Court on Thursday put an end to the Gujarat government’s endeavour to get the appointment of Justice (retd) R A Mehta as state Lokayukta quashed

The Supreme Court on Thursday put an end to the Gujarat government’s endeavour to get the appointment of Justice (retd) R A Mehta as state Lokayukta quashed.

A five-judge Bench led by outgoing Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir did not find merit in the curative petition filed by the government and dismissed the petition demanding a re-examination of his selection. The order upheld the previous judgments on dismissing the state government’s appeal against the High Court order as well as a review petition.

Curative petition is the last procedural resort for a party to seek redressal against the apex court verdict. The petition had sought a relook into the judgment in January. The Gujarat government had suffered a major legal defeat as the Supreme Court upheld the appointment of retired judge R A Mehta as Lokayukta, dismissing objections against the selection process and allegations that he was biased against the government.
