Pak will help find Jundallah chief
Islamabad: Amid mounting pressure from Iran,Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Saturday said his country will fully cooperate with Tehran to help track down and punish those responsible for a deadly attack that killed top commanders of the Revolutionary Guards. Gilani gave the assurance to Irans Interior Minister Mostafa Muhammad Najjar,who arrived here on Friday to press for action against Pakistan-based elements of the Jundallah militant group that was behind the attack.
Zimbabwe police raid MDC House
HARARE: Zimbabwes Finance Minister said police raided a house used by executives of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirais party. Tendai Biti,secretary-general of Tsvangirais Movement for Democratic Change,said Saturday that 50 armed police ransacked the house in a Harare suburb on Friday night. He said a caretaker was assaulted and party documents were taken away.
Merkel seals coalition deal
BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives sealed a coalition deal with the Free Democrats (FDP) after marathon talks that stretched into early Saturday,leaders from the parties said. The agreement paves way for a new center-right government to take office next week,roughly a month after Merkels conservatives and the FDP won a parliamentary majority in a federal election.
Ghanaian cardinal to head peace office
Vatican City: The Pope appointed Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana to head the Vaticans justice and peace office on Saturday,a high-profile post that cements his reputation as a possible future papal candidate. Turkson had said there was no reason there couldnt be a Black pope,particularly after Obama became US President.
Daughter of Bangla coup convict held
Dhaka: The Bangladesh police on Saturday arrested the daughter of a key fugitive accused in the assassination of the countrys founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mehraj Rashid Khandaker,daughter of absconding ex-army Colonel Abdur Rashid who is on the run to evade death penalty,was arrested here in connection with the bomb attack on a ruling party lawmaker and a key lawyer on the prosecution side of the trial,police officials said.
