Due to alleged lack of co-ordination between a special wing of UP police and Kanpur police,a 14-year-old son of a local businessman was killed, even after the family paid a ransom to his kidnappers. However, cops claimed it happened as the local police was not informed on time.

A Class IX student of UP Kirana School,Karan Maheshwari was kidnapped on the evening of July 9 from near his Kidwai Nagar residence. On Friday night, his father Pawan Kumar Maheshwari paid the ransom. But the kidnappers slit the throat of the boy and threw his body near Mahesh Kheda village in Unnao district.

On Saturday morning, the Unnao police found the body and, after a postmortem, buried it on the banks of the Ganga river as unclaimed. On Sunday morning, when Pawan identified the body from the photographs,it was exhumed and brought to Kanpur.

SP (Kanpur East) Dharam Veer Singh, who is Investigating Officer (IO) in the case, said the kidnapping was in the knowledge of “a special wing of police”,but senior police officers denied they had any information till late on Saturday.

The father lodged a case at Kidwai Nagar police station on Saturday night. “Though Pawan did not immediately approach the police,he said he had informed special wing of UP police about the incident. He told us that since he had been taking help from the special wing of police,he did not inform the local police,” said the IO. Strangely,on Saturday night,Pawan had told the media that he had informed the special wing, but on Sunday he went back on his statement.

Kanpur DIG Neera Rawat said the family had made a major mistake by not informing the local police on time.
