Director Priyadarshans Tamil film Kanchivaram,story of a Kanjivaram silk weaver who goes on to become a revolutionary political leader won the top honour at the 55th National Film Awards 2007 announced Monday. This is Priyadarshans first National Award.
The awards were announced by S M Khan,Director of the Directorate of Film Festivals and jury members Sai Paranjape,Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. Renowned Malayalam film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan won the Award for Best Director,his ninth National Award,for his film Naalu Pennungal.
For the top honour,Kanchivaram beat big budget Hindi films including Aamir Khans directorial debut Taare Zameen Par and Shah Rukh Khans Chak De India. The blockbusters had to be content with Best Film on Family Welfare and the Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment awards respectively.
Sheetal Talwars Dharm won the Nargis Dutt Award for National Integration and Foto,the Hindi film produced by the Childrens Film Society,bagged the Best Childrens Film. Hope Dies Last in War was adjudged the Best Non-Feature Film. Gandhi My Father ran away with three awardsBest Screenplay,Best Supporting Actor and Special Jury Award.
Kannada actress Uma Shri got the Best Actress award for Gulabi Talkies and Prakash Raj got the award for the Best Actor for Kanchivaram. The Best Child Actor award was bagged by Sharad Goyekar for his role in Marathi film Tingya.
Shankar Mahadevan won the Best Male Playback Singer award for his rendition of the song Maa in Taare Zameen Par,which also earned Prasoon Joshi the Best Lyricist award. Shreya Ghoshal won the Best Female Playback Singer award for Jab We Met. Hindi film Frozen won Shivajee Chandrabhushan the Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director. Rajnikanth starrer Shivaji: The Boss won the award for Best Special Effects.
In the non-feature film category,Jayaraj got the Best Director Award for Malayalam film Vellapokathil while Shweta Merchants Bengali film Lal Juto won the Best First Non-feature Film of a Director Award. Films Division produced Hindi Film Antardhwani by Dr Jabbar Patel was adjudged the best film in the Biographical/Historical Reconstruction/compilation film category. The 13-member jury for the feature film category was headed by Sai Paranjpye while the six-member jury for non-fiction film category was headed by documentary filmmaker Ashoke Vishwanathan.
