The body of the 20-year-old girl, who was found dead near a canal in Jind, was finally cremated by her family in her native village Saturday afternoon. The victim’s family and villagers from the area had been protesting against the state government for a week, alleging that the girl had been raped and murdered by unidentified persons. They also refused to cremate the body.

But after police investigations and three autopsies, including one at Delhi’s AIIMS,ruled out the possibility of rape and murder, the villagers finally agreed to perform the last rites. On August 24,the girl had left her village to appear for the junior basic training exam. The next day,her body was recovered near Amarheri village.
