Irda calls for standard protocol of treatment and standardised pricing

The regulator called for a standard protocol of treatment and a standardised cost for those treatments.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) has pulled up the healthcare industry for the gaps in delivery of insurance.

The regulator called for a standard protocol of treatment and a standardised cost for those treatments, which it said would lead to making health insurance more affordable.

“We find lot of gaps. We do not have a standard protocol of treatment as it varies from hospital to hospital and from doctor to doctor. We need a way of coming out with a protocol of treatment and standard procedure of diagnosis and then probably standard cost of treatment,” said M Ramaprasad, member (non-life),Irda while addressing the CII’s Health Insurance Summit here on Monday.

“Today, the cost of a particular process may vary from Rs 20,000 at one and Rs 1 lakh at the other depending upon the hospital and its area of location. That is where the challenge comes for insurance products to meet these outgos,” he added.

While he called for greater co-ordination between various stakeholders within the segment,Ramaprasad said that the government has recently formed committees to work out standard costing of certain processes at hospitals.
