India has ‘huge stakes’ in Holbrooke’s success: WikiLeaks

While public perception has been that India is not keen to support Af-Pak envoy Richard Holbrooke,leaked US diplomatic cables revealed that India not only welcomed him but also conveyed that New Delhi had a huge stake in his success.

The cables reveal that in a meeting with Holbrooke in February 2009,then Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told the US Representative that India would support him publicly and would include in public statements that India had a huge stake in Holbrooke’s success.

“The Indian government,too,was pleased with Holbrooke’s appointment,he stated,adding ‘We have a huge stake in your success in this role.’ He agreed with Holbrooke’s assessment that in regard to the problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan “you can’t solve one without the other”,the leaked cables read.
