India,Brazil,Germany and Japan have made their first joint bid for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC),making the case for expansion of both permanent and non permanent memberships.
In a joint statement issued during a plenary meeting of the Inter Governmental Negotiations on UNSC reform at UN HQ on Thursday,the countries underlined that they have a common vision of an enlarged Security Council that better reflects the geopolitical realities of the 21st Century.
This Council should be expanded in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership,taking into consideration the contributions made by countries to the maintenance of international peace and security,as well as the need for increased representation of developing countries in both categories, the statement said.
The nations have made the point that Africa needs to be represented in the permanent membership of an enlarged Council but have expressed disappointment on the progress made on UNSC reforms so far.
