Muslim enrolment in primary classes increased from 9.39 per cent in 2006-07 to 10.49 per cent in 2007-08. Corresponding figures for upper primary enrolment stood at 8.54 per cent in 2007-08 and 7.52 per cent in 2006-07,according to the latest district-level report of the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) called Elementary education in India: Progress towards Universal Elementary Education 2007-08.
Percentage of girls enrolment in primary and upper primary classes,too,increased to 48.22 per cent and 46.99 per cent in 2007-08 from 48.09 per cent and 46.51 per cent in 2006-07,respectively.
The overall enrolment in primary classes increased to 134 million in 2007-08 from 132 million in 2006-07. For upper primary,enrolment increased to 50.9 million in 2007-08 from 47.49 million in 2006-07.
Not all trends are encouraging though. At 10.95 per cent,ST enrolment,for instance,has dipped as compared to 19.83 per cent for SCs and 42.22 per cent for OBCs,according to the report.
Enrolment apart,the Educational Development Index (EDI),which NUEPA computes annually on the basis of 23 indicators like access,infrastructure,teaching outcomes and so on,has Puducherry on top of the list. Puducherry,with EDI value of 0.799 against the highest EDI value of 1.00,is followed by Delhi,Lakshadweep,Tamil Nadu and Kerala (0.766). The states ranked at the bottom are Bihar (EDI,0.389),followed by Arunachal Pradesh,Jharkhand,Assam and Meghalaya (EDI,0.527).
