Seeking to address concerns on violation of privacy,the Unique Identification Authority of India has proposed hefty penalties for individuals and companies for any misuse of personal data while dealing with the unique identification numbers that are to be given to every Indian resident.

In the draft bill,that seeks to set up a statutory body named National Identification Authority of India for issuing identification numbers to individuals residing in the country,the UIDAI has proposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore minimum,coupled with a three-year jail term,for certain categories of crimes related to attempts to damage the central database containing biometric information of people.

For certain other offences like attempts of impersonation or unauthorised disclosure of identity information are sought to be made punishable by lesser penalties,ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs one lakh in fine and/or a three year jail term.
