HC notices to Assam govt on student’s death

The Gauhati High Court Wednesday issued notices to the Assam government with regard to the slow investigation in the death of a college student in Diphu town on June 25. The notices were issued following two PILs — one filed by a lawyer and the other taken up by the court suo motu.

Jhankar Saikia,a college student,was assaulted by a mob instigated by a group of autorickshaw drivers. Two police personnel allegedly aided and abetted the assault. Six days after the assault,Jhankar succumbed to his injuries in a Guwahati hospital.

Jhankar argued with an autorickshaw driver after the latter demanded Rs 10 more than the actual fare. He was accompanied by father Haren Sakia. Following the altercation,some autorickshaw drivers started assaulting the two. Some time later more people joined in assaulting the two.
