India on Saturday said the arrest of Ghulam Nabi Fai in the US was long overdue as there has been suspicion for a long time that he was getting funds from Pakistani agencies.

“Yes,his (Fai) arrest was long overdue,” Union Home Secretary R K Singh said in Thimphu when asked about the arrest of the US-based chief of a Kashmir advocacy group in America. “Because we had fair degree of suspicion that the money he used to get was given by the agencies in Pakistan.”

Fai was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday for illegally lobbying for Pakistan and its spy agency ISI to influence US policy on Kashmir.

Meanwhile, sources in the government said in New Delhi that the Indian embassy was in touch with the US Justice department on the issue.

Sources said New Delhi knew about his activities since long and had pointed them out to the US as well.

“There are people like him in London and Brussels as well. They must be running for cover now. Focus and attention will be paid to these outfits as well,it is a good thing,” a source said.
