Depp,Portman make sign language blunder

Portman uses sign of ‘tampon’ for ‘appear’,Depp uses ‘enemy’ for ‘valentine’

Actor Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman have been criticised by hearing impaired music fans for using incorrect sign language in Sir Paul McCartney’s latest music video.

The Beatles legend recruited the actors to use sign language to accompany the lyrics to his track ‘My Valentine’ in a black-and-white promo directed by McCartney himself, reported Contactmusic.

However, hearing impaired devotees pointed out the errors made by the actors. They criticised Portman for using the sign for the word “tampon” instead of “appear”,while Depp made the motion for “enemy” while attempting “valentine”.

However,a representative for The British Deaf Association praised the duo for their efforts. “It’s great that famous people such as Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman are highlighting the use of sign language. Their use of it is more a poetic expression. The sign for tampon does seem to come up from both Johnny and Natalie, which causes some confusion, especially as American and British sign languages are different. It would have been nice if genuine deaf people had been used. But it’s still great,” the spokesperson said.

The album was released in February, but on Friday night the British singer debuted the video at his daughter Stella McCartney’s LA clothing store. The exclusive screening party drew stars like Gwyneth Paltrow,Reese Witherspoon,Kristen Stewart, and Zooey Deschanel.
