Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma is likely to be appointed as the countrys next Comptroller and Auditor General. Although a formal order is yet to be issued,the recommendation for his appointment has been sent to President Pranab Mukherjee.
The incumbent CAG,Vinod Rai,is set to retire by May-end. Sharmas appointment is likely to be announced after Mukherjee returns from Kolkata on Saturday.
A 1976-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer,Sharmas two-year term as Defence Secretary is set to end in July this year. He earlier served as Secretary,Department of Financial Services,and DG (Acquisition),Defence Ministry.
Apart from Sharma,Revenue Secretary Sumit Bose,Planning Commission Secretary Sindhushree Khullar and former Telecom Secretary R Chandrasekhar were also in the race for the CAGs post. The CAG is appointed for a term of six years or till he attains the age of 65 years,whichever is earlier.
