A Magistrate’s court here on Thursday granted the central crime branch police in the city an additional 14-day custody of 11 youths arrested on August 29 and 30 from Bangalore and Hubli for terror links, following a plea by the police for more time to carry out further investigation.

The 11 youths, all of whom are from Hubli, including a DRDO engineer and a journalist, were arrested on charges of planning acts of terrorism by the Bangalore police in an operation stated to have been carried out after nearly three months of surveillance by the Andhra Pradesh counter intelligence wing.

The Bangalore Police have accused the youths of plotting to attack a right-wing newspaper columnist, two newspaper editors and two right-wing political figures.

It is being probed whether two of the youths had travelled to Pakistan in December last year with the intention of fighting in Afghanistan. The role of terrorist groups like the LeT and HuJI in facilitating their travel is also being investigated.

The case was posted to September 27.
