With Justice (retd) R A Mehta deciding not to assume the office of Gujarat Lokayukta, the Congress hit out at CM Narendra Modi saying the incident reflected that there was no space for a counterview in the state. Justice Mehta declines Lokayukta post in Gujarat stating Gujarat Govt Damaged My Credibility. Why Modi (is) scared of Lokayukta in Gujarat? … If Modi is honest, what is he scared of? tweeted Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh. The senior Congress leader also claimed that Modi government spent Rs 45 crore to wage the legal battle to stall Mehtas appointment.
It is to be noted that the state government had challenged the appointment of Mehta in the High Court as well as the Supreme Court. However, both the courts had ruled against it.
Arguing that Gujarat remains without a Lokyukta ever since Modi came to power, Singh asked: Is there a forum in Gujarat where cases of corruption can be taken up?
Later,Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar also hit out at Modi saying if a judge is saying this, there is indeed a need to understand what this wind blowing from Gujarat is.
