Murdoch’s firm settles 9 phone hacking lawsuits

LONDON: Nine more phone hacking lawsuits against Rupert Murdoch’s News International have been settled,including a case brought by comedian Steve Coogan (who won £40,000),his lawyer told Britain’s High Court Wednesday. That brings to more than 60 the number of claims that Murdoch’s UK newspaper company has dealt with in the phone-hacking scandal.

3 sentenced for Indonesia mosque blast

TANGERANG: An Indonesian court sentenced three Islamic militants Wednesday to up to nine years in prison for their involvement in last year’s suicide bombing at a mosque. Ahmad Basuki received a nine-year sentence. Two other men,Arif Budiman and Mardiansyah,were sentenced to seven-year terms in a court in Tangerang city.

Qantas grounds A380 after cracks on wing

SYDNEY: Australia’s Qantas Airways said Wednesday it was temporarily grounding one of its A380 superjumbos after discovering dozens of hairline cracks in its wings during a maintenance inspection. The Australian flagship carrier said the 36 small fissures posed no threat to safety. Meanwhile,the European Air Safety Agency extended checks for Airbus A380 wing cracks to the entire superjumbo fleet.

Chinese police hunt for man who stabbed 2 kids

BEIJING: The police in eastern China are hunting for a knife-wielding man who broke into a middle school Wednesday and stabbed two students before fleeing,local officials said. The victims were not seriously wounded and no motive was given for the attack,which echoes a string of such assaults against schoolchildren in early 2010.
