The RSS has told the BJP that none of its senior functionaries is involved or has anything to do with the blasts at the Mecca Masjid and Ajmer Sharif, and that it has identified a group of lower-level functionaries with roots in Madhya Pradesh who may be involved and who would be expelled in the coming days.
For the past week, the RSS has been briefing senior BJP leaders about the CBI questioning its two UP functionaries over links with the Ajmer Sharif bombing accused and the expelled Devender Gupta. The Sangh apparently has given a clean chit to both Ashok Berry and Ashok Varshney, saying neither knew about Guptas involvement.
The RSS urgency is on account of the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, where it expects the Congress and Left to target the BJP over the charges. The alleged role of Hindu groups behind blasts was also discussed in a cursory manner at the annual prant pracharak meeting of the Sangh in Jodhpur recently.
In a statement on Monday,Sangh leader Ram Madhav rejected the allegations of RSS members being involved in the blasts as baseless.
He also promised that they would cooperate in the investigations, provided these were conducted in a professional manner.
The RSS has been watching out for cadres who may have extremist links and identified the entire group that joined hands with the Abhinav Bharat. The RSS has let the BJP know that it would take a belligerent stand if it felt that there was a conspiracy to malign Hindu organisations. The Sangh will not take lying down any attempts by agencies to malign its reputation, said a senior RSS leader.
Though the BJP had raised furore over the arrest of Pragya Thakur, the party decided to be more discreet after then National Security Advisor M K Narayanan shared specific details about her with Advani.
