Assam tribal council polls today amid bandh call

Several houses have been set on fire.

The first phase of election to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) will take place in Goalpara and parts of Kamrup district in Assam on Wednesday amid a 36-hour bandh called by some groups opposed to the election.

A series of violent incidents have already disrupted much of the campaign.

The election has been opposed by organisations claiming to represent communities other than the Rabha tribe, leading to a series of violent incidents in which several persons have been injured in the past few days. Several houses have been set on fire.

“We have made an elaborate security arrangement for conducting the first phase of election that will be held in seven constituencies under Goalpara tomorrow,” Pritam Saikia, deputy commissioner of Goalpara district, said. Twenty-eight companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in addition to the regular state police deployment,he said. The second and third phase of elections will be held on November 16 and 25 respectively.
