French tenor Thierry Pillon was so inspired by India and the various experiences the country has to offer that he decided to pay homage to his Indian audiences by singing Alessandro Scarlatti’s Gia il sole dal Gange — the famous aria about River Ganga — at an evening of operatic arias and songs held at India International Centre (IIC) on Tuesday. The concert “Les Chemins de l’amour – Paths of Love”,which was organised by The Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre and Neemrana Music Foundation in collaboration with IIC,also featured soprano Sylvia Sass and pianist Balazs Fulei from Hungary.

The trio performed French and Italian numbers and it was their first joint performance. On the occasion,Fulei said,“We wanted to do something special for the audience. So,we decided to perform on the theme of love. This love could be of any kind — between lovers, patriotic love or even comical love.” A highlight of the evening was Sylvia’s performance of a habanera from French composer Georges Bizet’s Carmen. Fulei, who started playing the piano at the age of eight, also played a piece titled L’isle joyeuse by Claude Debussy. “This piece was written by the French composer when he was on honeymoon with his second wife,” he said.
