Kalavati Bandurkar, a widow whose name Rahul Gandhi mentioned in the Lok Sabha during the trust vote debate, has warned that she might follow her husband’s ‘steps’ and end life if her demands were not met.
Kalavati, joined farmers in a ‘sit-in’ called jointly by the Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) and Shetkari Sangharsha Samiti at Pandharkawda tehsil office on Friday to stress for their demand for immediate release of fresh crop loans.
However, VJAS president Kishore Tiwari on Saturday denied that Kalavati threatened to end life.
After the protest, Kalawati had only said she might follow the path of her husband if her demands were not met, Tiwari quoted her as saying.
“She did not say that she would end life on a stipulated date and certainly not today as reported in some sections of the media,” Tiwari said.
Meanwhile, Yavatmal District Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre who is in Delhi, said over phone that the news about Kalavati’s ‘suicide threat’ is nothing but a media gimmick and urged the farmers not to be carried away by such reports.
Thakre enlisted assistance extended to Kalavati by the Yavatmal District Congress Committee at the behest of Rahul Gandhi who visited her on July 18.
