VHP international vice-president Giriraj Kishore today called upon Muslims to reinterpret the Shariat claiming that there are 24 Ayats (verses) in the Quran which hurt the sentiments of people from other faiths. He further said that the Parliament should reconsider the definition of minorities, effectively ruling out Muslims.

Giriraj pointed out that Egypt had modified the Shariat to improve its relations with Israel and added that if Muslims found any offensive passages in any of the Hindu religious texts, the VHP would be willing to delete them.

He said though the Constitution says India is a secular country and that special treatment should be given to minorities, it does not provide a definition of the term. Parliament should, therefore, frame a new law defining minorities. The UN charter, he said, states if a sect forms less than 10 per cent of the country’s population, it can be classified as a minority. But at present, Muslims constitute 13 to 14 per cent of the population.
