WASHINGTON: US President George W. Bush will lift controversial steel tariffs but keep in place a system — favoured by US steel producers — to license and track imports to minimise the risk of sudden surges, White House sources said on Thursday. Advocates of the licensing and monitoring system call it an ‘‘early warning system’’ against potential surges in steel imports. Reuters |

A commerce department said: “we found that producers/exporters of prestressed concrete steel wire strand (pc strand) from Brazil, India, Mexico, Republic of Korea, and Thailand sold their products in the us at less than fair value and that countervailable subsidies exist with regard to exports from India.”
The department also announced that the countervailing duty investigation had been aligned with the concurrent anti-dumping duty investigation. The petition requesting the investigations was filed on January 31, by three US firms. (PTI)
