It may sound incredible but overseas placement offers can be secured for as less as Rs 432 through a government agency rather than relying on private agencies with doubtful credentials.

More than 6,000 people have been successfully placed abroad through the Overseas Manpower Corporation Limited (OMC) since it was set up by the state government in 1978. ‘‘All a person needs to do to find genuine placement offers from companies abroad is register with us by paying a nominal fee varying from Rs 432 to Rs 972 depending on the qualification. We give each candidate a registration number as in employment exchanges and inform them about vacancies besides facilitating interviews,’’ said Selvaraj, administrative officer at OMC.

The OMC, one among the three such government-run placement agencies in the country, does not charge any visa fee. ‘‘A candidate is required to pay a nominal service charge only at the time of taking up a job through the OMC,’’ Selvaraj said.

Besides arranging for jobs according to qualification, the OMC arranges for passports, air tickets and insurance of the recruits. The corporation has a computerised databank of over 25,000 job-seekers with details of the educational qualification and job requirements of doctors and engineers down to skilled and unskilled labourers. Based on the client’s needs, the candidates are screened and shortlisted.

‘‘Being a government agency, we have a good rapport with various foreign missions and emigration authorities which helps to speed up the visa and emigration process,’’ he said.

‘‘At present, there are vacancies for the post of protection engineers, substation engineers, electrical engineers, communication engineers and material design engineers in Saudi Arabia,’’ a spokesperson said.

Some public sector recruiters on OMC’s list include the Ministry of Electricity and Water, Kuwait; Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority; Ministry of Health, Maldives and the Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation.
