.

They tried to beat the new system introduced for stamp duty payment after the Abdul Karim Telgi scam. But the law caught up with Jayesh Shah (49), Hari Dattar (33) and Anant Deshmukh (30) on May 30.

In the new system (which has replaced revenue stamps), the stamp duty is paid at a bank recommended by the registrar’s office. The bank then endorses the invoice, which is produced at the registrar’s office for completion of the registration of the document.

‘‘What the trio allegedly did was fake the stamp of the bank collection counter and thereby got the document registered for free,’’ said Assistant Police Inspector Kailash Ahwad.

The scam came to light when deputy registrar Rajendra Patil stumbled upon some bank receipts which allegedly had some stamped, fraudulent endorsements.

The Naupada police arrested Shah from his Nallsopara residence. Dattar and Deshmukh were picked up from Thane. The loss to the state exchequer from the 11 cases brought to the notice of the police has been estimated at Rs 84,000. The accused have been remanded to police custody till next Monday.
