PUNE, March 15: In a tragic incident at the Peshwe Zoological Park on Saturday afternoon, a Royal Bengal tigress mauled to death a man who managed to enter the cage where the animal was on display. The man’s identity could not be established till late evening.
The first such incident in the Park, it occurred when the man, who police say must have been `mentally deranged,’ slipped past park employees and entered the cage. It was only when the man screamed for help that the park employees realised what had happened. By the time they managed to direct a water jet at the tigress and send her packing to one end of the cage, the intruder was dead.
Employees who entered the cage said the man had almost been decapitated with severe injuries in the neck region.
