Calcutta, OCT 28: authorities have evacuated several thousand people from the lowlying areas of three districts in South Bengal as the cyclone in the bay of Bengal is expected to hit the state this afternoon.

Official sources said the state government had already sounded analert in three coastal districts of midnapore, North and South 24 parganas besides howrah, hooghly and nadia.

The state government has also asked the district oficials to gearup themselves for any eventuality. The sources said police made extensive announcements in the capital city and districts asking the people to be careful about the cyclone.

The state government has already asked the fishermen not not toventure out in the sea and directed the district magistrates to store sufficient relief materials to meet any emergency.
