CHENNAI, Nov 14: Testosterone replacement therapy can combat age-related physical ailments among men, androgen deficiency expert Dr L J G Gooren said on Friday.

Speaking to mediapersons, he said the onset of the condition in men similar to menopause was more gradual. The effects of lower testosterone levels are loss of sexual activity, loss of muscle mass and strength, loss of bone mineral density and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The drop in testosterone levels can be detected in blood. The levels decline on an average of one per cent between the ages of 40 and 70. The loss can be recouped with testosterone with synthetic hormones in the form of capsules and injections.

Dr Gooren who is based in Holland, is in the city for a seminar to create awareness about synthetic testosterone capsules in India among doctors.
