It is sad and unfortunate that the government has extended tax concessions to the earnings of cricketers from World Cup matches. By doing this, the government is provoking people to look for ways and reasons to avoid paying income tax. Can someone explain the rationale behind this?
There is no denying that our cricketers have done the country proud with their performance in the World Cup so far. But that does not justify the tax concessions. One might say that they are always under pressure, given the high and vocal expectations of 100 crore people. But then, who excels in a vacuum? Who works without pressure?
Today, job insecurity is assuming alarming proportions. The government is not ready to take care of the common man. Every Budget factors in a fuel hike, and there are ripple effects. What does a tax-payer get from the government in return? Absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, the common, salaried person cannot evade tax since it’s deducted at source.
If cricketers work hard, what about others? Do others receive a salary for doing nothing in the office? If performing players are doing their job, the common man is too. Players are being rewarded with advertisement contracts, and unfortunately the common man has to pay tax for their luxury.
