After its American debut, the supermarket chain Tesco plans to enter Indian and Russian markets in a big way.

“The move across the Atlantic was just the start of a pretty ambitious world-wide growth programme including India and Russia,” Chief Executive Sir Terry Leahy said on Monday night.

“We keep looking at everywhere,” he said, adding that a “crossover”, where international sales overtake sales in the UK, would take place within the decade.”

Tesco, the UK based retail giant, which has opened 13 shops under the Fresh and Easy banner in the US this month, currently makes 27 per cent of its 50 billion pounds of annual revenue from its overseas stores.

“We are on the threshold of becoming one of the few successful international retailers. There’s plenty to do,” he said.
