NEW DELHI, July 28: Sukhwinder Walia’s hat-trick was the highlight of Northern Railway’s thumping 8-0 victory over the Railway Board in the Delhi Hockey Association-conducted Delhi State Institutional League Championships at Shivaji Stadium here today.
As the scoreline suggests, it was a one-sided affair with the Northern Railway players completely dominating the proceedings and not allowing their opponents to get anywhere near their area. They led 4-0 at the interval.
Centre-forward K B Singh gave a flying start to Northern Railway by opening the account in the eighth minute and then followed it up by another goal two minutes later.
Inside-right Daud Suleman then took over from where K B Singh had left and mesmerised the Railway Board defence with a goal in the 20th minute.
But it was Sukhwinder Walia who completely exposed the Railway Board defence with his three-ina-row effort. The first goal, his team’s fourth, came in the 28th minute of the first half. After change of ends, Walia came with two more goals in succession, in the 32nd and 35th minute respectively.
Suleman completed the tally with two more goals n the 45th and 55th minute.
Another match, between Food Corporation of India (Headquarters) and Delhi Vidyut Board turned out to be an interesting encounter, in contrast. FCI beat Delhi Vidyut Board 2-1 after leading 2-0 at the end of the first half.
FCI took the lead in the very second minute through centre-forward Satinder Sharma. Amarnath Yadav increased the lead in the 25th minute.
DVB struggled to come to terms with themselves and made repeated efforts to reduce the mnargin. They finally succeeded when outside-left Subhash Katoch found the target in the 58th minute.
The final match of the day, scheduled between Delhi Transport Corporation and Indian Airlines failed to come off as DTC did not turn up for the game. Airlines were awarded a walkover. DTC did not play their first match of the league when their players did not turn up in proper kit.
