Following a meeting, Hindu and Christian leaders said on Monday that forced conversions would affect the secular fabric of the society and one must abstain from promoting such acts.

The discussions were held against the backdrop of attacks on places of worship in Orissa, Karnataka and Kerala in recent weeks.

The meeting urged people to be vigilant against attempts by politicians to capitalise on the volatile situation emerging out of the attacks. The meeting promoted the message that one’s religion should not harm the sentiments of another.

While Hindu Aikya Vedi state secretary Kummanam Rajashekharan and several swamis represented the Hindu side, the Christian community was represented by Major Archbishop Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil and heads of several other churches. Protestant groups, which have been facing charges of forced conversion, were not invited to the meet.
