
DEC 12: CHANDIGARH: THE Punjab Government has decided to withdraw 30 cases registered under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) against various political leaders and individuals in the State. An official release on Thursday stated that the review committee headed by the chief secretary had already initiated steps in this context. As many as 22 cases had been withdrawn from designated courts and the remaining eight cases were under the process of withdrawal. Prominent among those figuring in the TADA list was Akali Dal (Amritsar) president, Simranjit Singh Mann.
Of the three TADA cases against him, two which were registered at Khanna and Jaitu police stations had been withdrawn and the third one pertaining to Civil Lines at Patiala was under the process of withdrawal. The release maintained that all cases were being examined on merit to ensure justice. The committee was constituted under directions from the Supreme Court issued on April 4, 1994.
HC commends action in Sterlite case
CHENNAI: THE Madras High Court has said the Tamil Nadu government is now more aware about the need to keep the wheels of production moving with minimal interruption even while ensuring the safety of operations in factories. Closing the petition of Sterlite Industries Ltd, Tuticorin, for a directive to the chief inspector of factories (CIF) here to grant permission for restarting the factory, the judge said there was no need to apportion the responsibility for the delay in re-starting the factory. Observing that Sterlite was also to blame for the delay, the judge said the authorities had demonstrated their capacity for prompt action by acting with commendable speed.
AP blast accused in CID custody
HYDERABAD: Gangula Suranarayana Reddy alias Suri, prime accused in the Jubilee Hills bomb blast case, and his close associate Dasi Reddy were remanded to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody till December 23 by the IX Metropolitan Magistrate here on Thursday. Suri and Dasi Reddy were arrested by the Gouribidnur police at Chitradurga in Karnataka on Sunday in connection with an attempt to murder case under Chikballapur police station and were remanded to judicial custody there. The CID special team headed by Superintendent of Police Anuradha, probing the November 19 blast case which claimed 25 lives in the city, was granted a production warrant by a court at Chintamani.
